Last Rites for 3.5" Floppy Discs
(0 votes)

Sony announced that it will end Japanese sales of its 3.5" floppy discs in March 2011. Sony introduced the floppy disk in 1981, where it served as a linchpin for the sneakernet in the days before the commercial use of the Internet.

Due to the rise in the Internet for transferring files and larger-format storage media such as CDs, DVDs, Zip, and USB drives, Sony saw its Japanese sales of floppies shrink from 47 million discs in 2002 to 12 million in 2009. All in all, 3.5" floppies were a mainstay of file transfer between personal computers for the better part of three decades.

With the Safe-T Secure Managed File Transfer Solution and similar products, will CDs, DVDs and USB storage devices be able to match the longevity of the 3.5" floppy?
