The Digital Breakwater (Redux)
The growth of the "digital tsunami" or the "data tsunami" is still a very much a hot topic. At the Techonomy conference in Lake Tahoe, Google CEO Eric Schmidt made waves (pun intended) when he said that "There was 5 exabytes of information created between the dawn of civilization through 2003, but that much information is now created every 2 days, and the pace is increasing...People aren't ready for the technology revolution that's going to happen to them."
As I mentioned in a previous post, the bulk of this data is from user generated content and a lot of "digital junk". In fact, the IDC reports that only 25% of the digital universe is comprised of unique information.

MFT solutions like Safe-T can be used as a Digital Breakwater against the upcoming tsunami. They can be used to stem the growth of digital junk for both data in transit and data at rest.

For data in transit, you get a more efficient--and secure--form of file delivery that slows the uncontrolled growth of PST files that can destabilize Exchange servers and cripple user accounts. Rather than send out 40 emails of 22MB each, users would just send out a link or file pointer weighing a few KBs to their list of 40 people. The recipients would just click on the link and securely download the file.

For data at rest, you can avoid primary duplication by centralizing the storage of data files in virtual "Safe-T directories" and automatically clean up digital junk at scheduled intervals. You'll need to buy or rent less disk space and your mail servers will operate more efficiently.

In my next post, I hope to write more about the concrete benefits of virtual "Safe-T directories".
